Tips For Writing A Great Card

Posted by Elizabeth Leonidas on

I get it! It's so hard to think of what to say. Where are the stamps? Shoot, I'm out...  Ugh, it's hard to say I'm sorry beyond those two words...Is it weird to say Congratulations when I already saw her and said that...I already texted a sweet Thank You text, is the card even necessary?

Trust me, I get it, but words are so important, especially in times like 2020.  Think about it from the flip side! Do you have cards that you've kept because they meant so much to you? That is such a gift you can give to someone else. It's hard to keep a text and emails get lost in the sea of folders.

Let me take some of the burden off you! I've pre written cards with some thought starters below so hopefully it makes it easier to get started! Also, pro tip, keep a stack of different types of cards in a drawer somewhere WITH stamps.  I've included some of my favorites below for inspiration. That way when the time striked, open the drawer, pull up this blog post, and get your steps in as you walk to the mailbox to put up the red flag. Ha!

Ok here we go...

Thank You

Dear Blank,

Thank you so much for the blank! It means so much to me/I really love it because of blank.  You really know me so well.  I'm so grateful for you and our friendship.  2020 has been crazy for all of us but you really made my day!

Thanks again so much!

Love,

Blank

OR

Dear Blank,

I just wanted you to know that I'm so grateful for you! You're willingness to help me get my business started/your kind words during this difficult time/your endless effort for blank mean so much to me.  This has blank has difficult, but I couldn't get through it without you.

Thanks again so much!

I'm Sorry

Dear Blank,

I wanted to say again that I'm sorry. I really messed up and I just wanted to let you know that your friendship means a lot to me and I'd really like to make it right.  I'm far from perfect and forever a work in progress.  Call me when you're up for a chat.

Love,

Blank

Sympathy

Dear Blank,

I wanted to reach out and let you know how sorry I am to hear about blank's passing. The loss of a loved one is never easy, but please know that I am here with you through it, thinking of you, praying for your strength.  I always loved blank about Blank and will always be reminded of him/her when blank happens.  My heart goes out to you and your family. May each day bring additional strength and fond memories.

Love,

Blank

These are the hardest ones to write. It never feels like there is anything helpful to say during such a difficult time, but it's the effort and the thought that counts.  I also found this blog post to have some great suggestions:

Encouragement

Dear Blank,

I'm so proud of you for taking the big leap and taking the new job! I know it is a big change, but you've got this! I just wanted to say that I'm rooting for you.  It's going to be great!

Love,

Blank

OR

Dear Blank,

Ugh, broken bones/broken hearts/being laid off/breakups/etc are so hard.  I just wanted to drop off this large vessel of alcohol/delish dessert/this funny thing to help you through.  I know it's tough now, but keep your chin up.  You've got this!

Love,

Blank

Happy Birthday

Guys, don't phone this is one in by just signing your name. Say something!

Dear Blank,

Happy birthday! You don't look a day over 29/I hope blank spoils you today/I hope you sip wine and read a good book while pretending that you're at the beach (#2020).  You deserve a fabulous day!

Love,

Blank

Ok, I think that's got us covered. I hope this helps! If you're still on the fence about sending the card, just promise me you'll at least reach out in another way.  Words mean so much!

Happy writing!

xo,

Betsy

Oh, PS! Don't forget to jazz up the envelope!
